‘Our culture of lying’ strikes again

Thursday’s Wall Street Journal reported that AT&T has started calling its wireless network a 4G network.  That’s the form of it.  The substance is that the network is identical to the 3G network it had up until the moment of its press release.  That is, AT&T is lying.

While true that AT&T is building out a massive 4G network, that network is far from complete.  But because it lags its competitors and doesn’t want to lose in the battle for subscribers, its tactic was to lie.

Folks, this sort of thing has to end if public trust is going to be restored.  As I have written about many times (see for example: https://jasonapollovoss.com/web2009/09/13/our-culture-of-lying/), western capitalist culture, most through its marketers, has gotten very used to lying.  The problem is that trust is the essential beating heart of capitalism.  Without trust between buyers and sellers there is no transaction.  Duh!  So shame on AT&T for giving fodder to those whose prejudice is so overwhelming that they want to do away with capitalism.  Double duh!
