Namely, how you conduct conversations with management, sell-side analysts, people in expert networks, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">How can we assert that so confidently? It is because almost all of us have formal training in all of the other parts of the investment process, but not in how best to conduct conversations to ensure we extract the highest quality information. These results echoed similar results in a more formal study where the average importance assigned by investment pros to deception detection was 82.86%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">You would think then that major educational institutions such as CFA Institute or major business schools, such as Harvard would provide coverage of the cutting-edge techniques that\u00a0<em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\">are scientifically proven to uncover deceptiveness<\/em>, yes? No.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\"><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\">Investment Process Training Review<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">A perusal of\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfainstitute.org\/en\/programs\/cfa\/curriculum\" rel=\"\">CFA Institute\u2019s 3-year curriculum for the CFA charter<\/a>\u00a0shows that it provides broad coverage of \u2018quantitative methods,\u2019 \u2018financial statement analysis,\u2019 \u2018valuation,\u2019 and \u2018portfolio management.\u2019 At Harvard Business School it is a similar story if you check out the\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/coursecatalog\/\" rel=\"\">HBS course catalog<\/a>, it shows similar coverage of the above skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">When it comes to providing CFA charter candidates skills in how to interview management, CFA Institute offers nothing. At HBS it is slightly better. Looking at the descriptions of the following courses it can be implied (but not known for sure) that MBA students are learning to evaluate people.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Leadership and Organizational Behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Leadership and Corporate Accountability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Managing Human Capital<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">However, nothing in the above courses is specific to how to evaluate management character, trustworthiness, or skills on how to conduct research via conversational due-diligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\">Body Language Cues Do Not Work<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">You may retort that you have received training from some of the firms out there teaching \u201clie detection.\u201d But don\u2019t get me started talking about some of the promulgators of \u201clie detection\u201d techniques where their staff is made up of former intelligence officers or members of law-enforcement where the emphasis is on identifying \u201ctells\u201d as revealed through visual and aural cues. In short,\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/deception-detection-the-pan-cultural-fiction-of-body-language?blogcategory=Body+Language\" rel=\"\">body language does not work for surfacing deception<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/key-scientific-paper-redux-%E2%80%93-police-interrogations-unscientific?blogcategory=Body+Language\" rel=\"\">Their techniques have been disproven repeatedly and rigorously by scientific research<\/a>. Even if their techniques did work, members of their community have also been repeatedly and rigorously examined for their skill by scientific research, but\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/key-scientific-paper-redux-%E2%80%93-who-can-best-catch-a-liar?blogcategory=Body+Language\" rel=\"\">law enforcement is actually worse at detecting deception than the general population<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\"><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\">Investment Pros\u2019 Deception Detection Accuracy<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">You may think that you have a natural talent for deception detection. In fact, our polling data suggests that you do believe this. During the week 30 August 2022 thru 6 September 2022, 123 investment pros responded to the following question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Q: My deception detection accuracy at work is\u2026?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><u class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-69\">&gt; 87.5%<\/u>&#8230;22.76%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><u class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-69\">75% to 87.5%<\/u>&#8230;20.33%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><u class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-69\">62.5% to 75%<\/u>&#8230;17.89%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><u class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-69\">50% to 62.5%<\/u>&#8230;39.84%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Adjusting for the skew caused by the answers being in ranges, the overall answer given by investments pros is that they are 66.31% accurate. Several years back, we tested investment pros to measure their deception detection accuracy. Sadly, they were just\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/how-good-are-finance-pros-at-detecting-deception?blogcategory=Body+Language\" rel=\"\">51.6% accurate at detecting deception<\/a>, or roughly chance 50:50 skill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">In a previous study, we asked investment pros a similar question as on LinkedIn. In that formal study,\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/financial-professionals%E2%80%99-beliefs-about-deception?blogcategory=Deception+Beliefs\" rel=\"\">the self-reported accuracy of finance pros was 68.2% at detecting deception<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Clearly there is a gap between the claimed accuracy of investment pros and their deception detection capabilities of around 68.2% and their actual accuracy of 51.6%; that gap is 31.26%. In other words, if you are a finance pro and reading this you are likely overconfident in your deception detection capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Another measurable gap is that 82.86% believe deception detection of management is important, but from our research we know the skill set is significantly below the level of importance assigned to it. This is true even if we trust investors that their accuracy is in the high 60% range. In this optimistic hypothetical, the gap is still in excess of 15%. The preceding information is evidence that the part of your investment process most in need of improvement is conducting due-diligence by interviewing people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: futural;\"><em class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-31 c2-66 c2-67\"><strong class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-2w c2-2x c2-3 c2-65 c2-13 c2-3v c2-66\">Scientific Evaluation of Management<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: futural;\">There is hope for evaluating the trustworthiness of management. Namely, most investment pros believe that deception detection is extremely important. However, even their overconfident belief in their deception detection skills is far below the level of importance they assign to deception detection. More importantly, their actual accuracy at detecting deception is far worse than their overconfident evaluation of their skillset. Several years back, we tested investment pros to measure their deception detection accuracy. Sadly, they were just\u00a0<a class=\"x-el x-el-a c2-2w c2-2x c2-69 c2-v c2-w c2-x c2-j c2-6a c2-3 c2-30 c2-31 c2-11 c2-32\" href=\"https:\/\/deceptionandtruthanalysis.com\/insights\/f\/how-good-are-finance-pros-at-detecting-deception?blogcategory=Body+Language\" rel=\"\">51.6% accurate at detecting deception<\/a>, or roughly chance 50:50 skill.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: futural;\">In a previous study, we asked investment pros a similar question as on LinkedIn. In other words, if you are a finance pro and reading this you are likely overconfident in your deception detection capabilities.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: futural;\">Another measurable gap is that 82.86% believe deception detection of management is important, but from our research we know the skill set is significantly below the level of importance assigned to it. This is true even if we trust investors that their accuracy is in the high 60% range. In this optimistic hypothetical, the gap is still in excess of 15%.
