{"id":1877,"date":"2010-10-15T11:58:32","date_gmt":"2010-10-15T15:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=1877"},"modified":"2018-08-17T14:08:16","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T18:08:16","slug":"retail-sales-for-september-surprise-barely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2010\/10\/15\/retail-sales-for-september-surprise-barely\/","title":{"rendered":"Retail sales for September surprise&#8230;barely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The U.S. Commerce Department reported today that U.S. retail sales rose 0.6% in September.\u00a0 This compares to an expected increase of 0.4%.\u00a0 Meanwhile, sales for the month of August have been dramatically revised upward.\u00a0 Initially, August&#8217;s purchases by consumers were reported up 0.4%, but now are reported to have been up a much more robust 0.7%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Areas of strength included: consumer electronics, appliances, furniture and especially automobiles.\u00a0 The only real area of weakness was clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> It is clear that the U.S. consumer is slowly, very slowly, extremely slowly putting her toes in the consumption waters again.\u00a0 Each month seems to bring increased purchases of new goods and products.\u00a0 I am particularly happy about the 0.3% increase in August&#8217;s figures.\u00a0 First, that minor increase in absolute terms (3 cents on $100) is still an upward revision of 75% in relative, percentage terms.\u00a0 As I talk with family, friends, acquaintances and others the mood of the U.S. consumer seems to be improving.\u00a0 Additionally, my intuitive sense is that the vibe of the U.S. consumer is stable and that there is a\u00a0growing confidence that was missing even two months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Further, if you look at the areas of the retail sales report that were strong they were all &#8220;big ticket&#8221; items, like appliances and autos.\u00a0 These items require a bigger cash outlay on the part of consumers.\u00a0 It is likely the case that folks are waiting for these things to break down and then they are replacing them.\u00a0 However, to purchase a new big ticket item is different than to repair it.\u00a0 That there is a preference for buying instead of fixing is noteworthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Lastly, note that scion of excess consumption, clothing purchases, was a weak spot in the report.\u00a0 I consider this to be indicative of a consumer whose confidence is still growing, but not back to the spendthrift days of yesteryear.\u00a0 And I actually feel that <em>is<\/em> a good thing.\u00a0 Better to spend on necessities while you get your financial house back in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 9;
