{"id":2820,"date":"2011-01-12T05:16:25","date_gmt":"2011-01-12T12:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=2820"},"modified":"2018-08-16T17:19:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T21:19:50","slug":"underemployment-unemployment-in-the-long-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/01\/12\/underemployment-unemployment-in-the-long-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Underemployment > unemployment in the long-term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Yesterday&#8217;s\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0featured an\u00a0article about the number of folks in the United States who have found &#8220;work&#8221; but are dramatically under-employed in their new positions.\u00a0 These are folks who have found a job but whose pay and responsibilities are dramatically lower than they were prior to losing their former\u00a0jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Examples of this included a money manager who was now working at Starbucks.\u00a0 A manufacturing manager with two masters degrees that is now working as a janitor.\u00a0 And so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If it weren&#8217;t bad enough that these very skilled folks are underutilized, consider their future pay.\u00a0 Unfortunately, most future pay increases use current pay as the basis for a raise.\u00a0 This means that these workers are unlikely to ever make as much money as they did before they lost their positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">I wrote about this likely result of the Great Recession almost two years ago.\u00a0 This is another example of how intuition trumps analysis.\u00a0 While other economic and financial market commentators await data, those who use their intuition have an additional, very powerful source of information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0featured an\u00a0article about the number of folks in the United States who have found &#8220;work&#8221; but are dramatically under-employed in their new positions.\u00a0 These are folks who have found a job but whose pay and responsibilities are dramatically lower than they were prior to losing their former\u00a0jobs.
