{"id":3007,"date":"2011-01-20T08:20:58","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T15:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=3007"},"modified":"2018-08-15T20:42:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T00:42:22","slug":"irrelevant-jobless-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/01\/20\/irrelevant-jobless-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Irrelevant jobless claims?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Something very interesting has happened today with regard to the weekly Department of Labor jobless claims data.\u00a0 &#8220;What,&#8221; you may ask has happened?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The news is not front page news on the Wall Street Journal&#8217;s website.\u00a0 Instead the data are only available on its &#8216;Economy&#8217; sub-section.\u00a0 This is the first time since the Great Recession ensued that this has happened.\u00a0 I <strong>do<\/strong> consider this to be an important sign that the emotional tenor of the economy is changing.\u00a0 Recall that in my <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2010\/12\/13\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-2011-predictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011 predictions<\/a> post I made the following general statement about a major theme:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Back to the Future &#8211;\u00a0Greater cohesion and stabilization\u00a0will result in a rhetoric and an imagining on the part of individuals with\u00a0an emphasis on the future.\u00a0 Folks have been focused on the immediate present in an unhealthy way.\u00a0 That has led to short-term decisions whose consequences are not fully understood.\u00a0 An analogy would be when you first get a severe cut on your body.\u00a0 Your attention is focused entirely on how to stop the bleeding.\u00a0 Then your attention shifts to how to stop the pain.\u00a0 Then your attention shifts to what the long-term ramifications are to your body \u2013 this is the stage we are entering in my opinion.\u00a0 Ultimately, the injury creates a scar that serves as a reminder of what went wrong, but the focus returns to the future.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That the jobless claims data has slipped from WSJ front-page relevancy is significant.\u00a0 It means that the psychology of people, in general, is improving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">So what could have led to the sub-section relegation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Initial weekly jobless claims fell by 37,000 to a total of 404,000 claims filed.\u00a0 What&#8217;s more, the previous week&#8217;s data were revised in the right direction.\u00a0 Last week&#8217;s jobless claims number was changed down by 4,000 to a total level of 441,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The decline of 37,000 is the biggest drop since February 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">More importantly, the four-week moving average figure improved, too.\u00a0 That number showed a decline of 4,000 to 411,750.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> While the jobless claims data has slipped from front page relevancy, the data do remain relevant.\u00a0 However, the front page slippage is warranted.\u00a0 The Great Recession has statistically been over for more than a year and a half.\u00a0 But the hangover of the unemployed has remained.\u00a0 That headache is finally showing signs of abating.\u00a0 A tremendously good, good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">It&#8217;s my feeling that by May the U.S. economy will, net, be adding jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 6; the jobless claims number is now stable and declining.\u00a0 So the jobless claims data is becoming less and less important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something very interesting has happened today with regard to the weekly Department of Labor jobless claims data.\u00a0 &#8220;What,&#8221; you may ask has happened?
