{"id":3381,"date":"2011-02-01T15:32:36","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T22:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=3381"},"modified":"2018-09-21T02:08:18","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T06:08:18","slug":"another-crisis-in-jordan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/02\/01\/another-crisis-in-jordan\/","title":{"rendered":"Another crisis in Jordan?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">One of the questions on the minds of those of us concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/01\/31\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-implications-of-egyptian-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the revolution-evolution in Egypt<\/a> is what the effect will be on other Middle Eastern nations.\u00a0 After all, Egypt&#8217;s crisis began after a popular uprising in Tunisia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">So you may have heard the news out of the country of Jordan today that King Abdullah II has fired the entire government of Prime Minister Samir Rifai.\u00a0 It&#8217;s likely then that you are also concerned that the Middle East is about to have a colossal meltdown.\u00a0 In turn that will send oil prices sky high and derail the nascent economic recovery.\u00a0 Am I right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">1.\u00a0 Know that these situations are not comparable apple to apple.\u00a0 The primary difference is in the relationship of Jordan&#8217;s leader with the people he governs.\u00a0 King Abdullah, while not heading up a perfect nation, has listened to his critics and tried to accommodate them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For example, in Egypt the Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, is outlawed, whereas in Jordan it is a legitimate, functioning political force.\u00a0 In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has been routinely squashed and its leadership imprisoned as a threat to the state.\u00a0 In fact, in Jordan the MB is an important part of the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">2.\u00a0 In both Egypt and Jordan there have been anti-government protests, but the goals of the opposition forces in the two countries are very different.\u00a0 In Egypt they want an entirely new political structure, a democracy.\u00a0 They also want Hosni Mubarak to step down and to have actual multi-party democratic elections for the first time in Egypt&#8217;s history.\u00a0 While in Jordan, the opposition is not looking for regime change.\u00a0 Instead they are wanting economic reforms, largely due to the large unemployment rate and slow growth of gross domestic product (GDP) in Jordan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Clearly there is a vast difference between these two sets of demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In conclusion, it is obvious that Jordan&#8217;s King Abdullah is not undertaking these actions due to an immutable opposition, but instead to preempt being swept away in a tsunami of Middle Eastern revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">I hope this news analysis is both intuitive and beneficial!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the questions on the minds of those of us concerned about the revolution-evolution in Egypt is what the effect will be on other Middle Eastern nations.\u00a0 After all, Egypt&#8217;s crisis began after a popular uprising in Tunisia. &nbsp;
