{"id":364,"date":"2010-03-04T11:51:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T16:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intuitiveinvestor.com\/web\/?p=364"},"modified":"2018-08-21T09:04:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T13:04:22","slug":"retail-sales-up-for-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2010\/03\/04\/retail-sales-up-for-february\/","title":{"rendered":"Retail sales up for February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Thomson-Reuters (a newswire agency) reported today that its gauge of retail sales in the month of February was up 4.0% vs. 2.9%.\u00a0 Retail sales have now been up 6 months in a row after 12 consecutive down months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> While 4.0% up is encouraging I have to point out that the 4.0% up is compared to last year&#8217;s February sales, which were dismal.\u00a0 So the advance in the Thomson-Reuters figure is nice information, but it really is a normal sized increase over what was a terrible number a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">My concern however, is that consumer confidence plunged last month.\u00a0 That is typically a harbinger of very poor consumer spending.\u00a0 Ergo, this number may not be so good this month.\u00a0 I am anticipating that retail sales will likely taper off for the month of March.\u00a0 The all important number remains the unemployment rate (see the post above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 6; retail sales last month are nice, but that number happened concurrently with the massive ~18% drop in consumer confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomson-Reuters (a newswire agency) reported today that its gauge of retail sales in the month of February was up 4.0% vs. 2.9%.\u00a0 Retail sales have now been up 6 months in a row after 12 consecutive down months.
