{"id":365,"date":"2010-03-04T12:06:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T17:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intuitiveinvestor.com\/web\/?p=365"},"modified":"2018-08-21T09:03:44","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T13:03:44","slug":"number-of-unemployed-drops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2010\/03\/04\/number-of-unemployed-drops\/","title":{"rendered":"Number of unemployed drops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The Department of Labor reported that initial jobless claims fell last week by 29,000 to 469,000.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the four-week moving average which is designed to smooth the volatility in the data, fell 3,500 to 470,750.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> I am neutral about this information.\u00a0 While an improvement in initial jobless claims of 29,000 is nice to see, the fact is that many job-seekers have stopped looking for work.\u00a0 So one week&#8217;s worth of data is tough to extrapolate into a &#8220;candy mountain&#8221; recovery.\u00a0 Initial jobless claims were improving for much of the last few months of 2009, only to see big increases so far this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Additionally, the moving average number, barely shows an improvement.\u00a0 Not only that, but the weekly revisions to the data still are mostly to the downside, meaning not good.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my opinion that this week&#8217;s data\u00a0is a sign of continued uncertainty.\u00a0 There is not a strong trend, which likely mirrors an uncertain economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 8; I have lowered the importance grade, because of the &#8220;treading water&#8221; nature of the data.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see next week&#8217;s number in conjunction with the reduction in consumer confidence, as well as the results of retail sales.\u00a0 These three combine to give a pretty good idea as to what is happening in the economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Labor reported that initial jobless claims fell last week by 29,000 to 469,000.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the four-week moving average which is designed to smooth the volatility in the data, fell 3,500 to 470,750.
