{"id":3867,"date":"2011-03-23T04:56:24","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T10:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=3867"},"modified":"2018-09-21T02:07:49","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T06:07:49","slug":"initial-estimate-of-japanese-quake-toll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/03\/23\/initial-estimate-of-japanese-quake-toll\/","title":{"rendered":"Initial Estimate of Japanese Quake Toll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This morning the Japanese government announced its initial estimate of the toll of the earthquake that struck almost two weeks ago.\u00a0 At this point the maximum damage estimate is put at $309 billion (\u00a525 trillion).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> Per person in Japan the above estimate is $2,422, using their population of 127,560,000 in 2009 (source: www.google.com\/publicdata).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Japan had total gross domestic product (GDP) of $5.07 trillion in 2009 (source: same as above), which works out to $39,746 GDP per capita.\u00a0 So the earthquake&#8217;s costs are equivalent to 6.1% of every single Japanese families income on a GDP per capita basis.\u00a0 Ouch!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Another way of looking at this information is that the United States&#8217; hurricane Katrina cost $81 billion, so at this early stage, the Japanese quake is estimated to be 3.8x larger in total damages.\u00a0 Double ouch!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In total the earthquake damages are assumed to cost 6.1% of one year&#8217;s worth of Japanese gross domestic product.\u00a0 Initially costs are estimated to take a full 0.5% off of Japanese GDP this year with the remainder to drain the economy over the next many years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In terms of worldwide GDP the quake&#8217;s costs are equivalent to $309 billion \u00f7 $61.96 trillion = 0.5%, or half a percentage point.\u00a0 This is not a big number for the global economy to absorb.\u00a0 Additionally, the Japanese will need to finance its economic recovery and will be purchasing goods from around the world to rebuild itself.\u00a0 While this will be a boost to GDP, most of this will not be a boost to <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2009\/01\/17\/what-is-real-economic-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real economic growth<\/a> as I define it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Some of the rebuilding will put in place more efficient technologies or stronger building structures more capable of surviving future earthquakes.\u00a0 But most of the economic &#8220;growth&#8221; will simply be to replace what was lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This estimate by the Japanese government is important because it is the left brain, quantitative analysis that can be bridged with <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/03\/13\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-intuitive-assessment-of-japanese-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a right brain, qualitative, intuitive assessment of the Japanese disaster<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 9; that the Japanese government has assessed damages and assigned a number to those damages is the important thing, irregardless of the total of $309 billion.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because investors despise potentially massive open-ended costs.\u00a0 By bringing into the light an estimate of quake costs much of the anxiety that has crippled financial markets regarding Japan will dissipate.\u00a0 Now investors will shift their attention to something else, most likely the first quarter U.S. corporate earnings season which ensues in exactly 8 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning the Japanese government announced its initial estimate of the toll of the earthquake that struck almost two weeks ago.\u00a0 At this point the maximum damage estimate is put at $309 billion (\u00a525 trillion). &nbsp; Analysis: Per person in Japan the above estimate is $2,422, using their population of 127,560,000 in 2009 (source: www.google.com\/publicdata).
