{"id":4099,"date":"2011-04-28T08:54:12","date_gmt":"2011-04-28T14:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=4099"},"modified":"2018-09-21T02:06:59","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T06:06:59","slug":"u-s-gdp-growth-slows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/04\/28\/u-s-gdp-growth-slows\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. GDP Growth Slows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">U.S. Commerce Department calculations estimate that first quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) growth slowed to 1.8%.\u00a0 By comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/01\/28\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-fourth-quarter-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth quarter GDP growth was 3.1%<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> Clearly this is a disappointing result.\u00a0 However, let&#8217;s review some of what happened in the first quarter and then compare that to <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/04\/26\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-consumer-confidence-up-is-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burgeoning consumer confidence<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">2011&#8217;s first three months was rocked by: continued slow improvement in the unemployment rate, <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/01\/30\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-an-intuitive-assessment-of-egypt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Egyptian crisis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/02\/22\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-intuitive-assessment-of-middle-east-unrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Middle Eastern crisis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2011\/03\/13\/what-my-intuition-tells-me-now-intuitive-assessment-of-japanese-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Japanese earthquake and tsunami<\/a>, the Japanese nuclear crisis, bad weather in the northeast, a budgetary struggle in Washington D.C. that threatened to shut down the government, a huge increase in fuel prices, and a potential NFL lockout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Regarding the battle between football owners and players, don&#8217;t laugh about this, people in the U.S. are depressed by the idea that they won&#8217;t be able to indulge in the favorite autumn pastime: football watching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That there was still nearly 2% economic growth is noteworthy.\u00a0 One year ago this set of circumstances would have been enough to derail the fragile U.S. recovery in GDP.\u00a0 However, this year, it did not.\u00a0 I consider the first quarter to have contained a near perfect storm of intense, unnerving news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What&#8217;s more, consumer confidence is still increasing, and ultimately that is what will drive the U.S. economy.\u00a0 I have said before that consumer confidence is a lagging economic indicator.\u00a0 That buyers in the United States remain confident in the face of adverse news means that they are continuing to spend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">My expectation is that first quarter GDP will be revised upward ultimately, as this is just the first pass at a data piece that is usually altered for years going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 10; GDP is the grand daddy economic statistic.\u00a0 It is the scale that weighs the quality of economic health.\u00a0 That GDP growth slowed deserves our continued attention.\u00a0 If GDP growth should be just as slow in the second quarter, then there will be trouble.\u00a0 If not, then we can all breathe a sigh of relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Commerce Department calculations estimate that first quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) growth slowed to 1.8%.\u00a0 By comparison, fourth quarter GDP growth was 3.1%.
