{"id":4289,"date":"2011-05-24T06:50:58","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T12:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=4289"},"modified":"2018-09-21T02:06:15","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T06:06:15","slug":"new-measure-of-a-countrys-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/05\/24\/new-measure-of-a-countrys-success\/","title":{"rendered":"New Measure of a Country&#8217;s Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Long-time readers of my blog will know that I think that exclusively <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2010\/11\/30\/solely-analytical-methods-are-doomed-to-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quantitative methods, in investing especially, are domed to failure<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s because quantitative methods measure facts and facts, by definition, took place in the past.\u00a0 But investing unfolds in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But facts are excellent at evaluating those past events when measuring is important.\u00a0 Take for example measuring the success of a country at providing for its people.\u00a0 The standard measure of success is gross domestic product (GDP).\u00a0 GDP simply measures total economic output.\u00a0 However, I think that you would agree with me that quality of life is not solely determined by quantity of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Believe it or not this concept is revolutionary to economists.\u00a0 But that old scion of conservatism, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), has announced that it is changing its mission to include a more qualitative measurement, they are calling this &#8220;a better life initiative.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The Better Life Index is made up of 11 data points, including traditional measures like income and employment, but now also includes factors like life satisfaction and safety.\u00a0 Amazingly, the OECD is offering users of their data tremendous flexibility to tweak the data.\u00a0 Users may choose the weightings that they give the various data points to see how its various 34 member nations score after the shifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Secretary General of the OECD, Angel Gurria says the new index, &#8220;has the potential to find out what people want and need and what government is giving them.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For me this is a tremendous success and a rare piece of evidence of human emotional intelligence (i.e. wisdom) evolution.\u00a0 Frankly, it is my hope that governments begin to sculpt their data gathering into measures that include a good balance of quantitative and qualitative measures.\u00a0 For now, let&#8217;s celebrate the OECD&#8217;s decision.\u00a0 That a major organization has done this will very likely have ripple effects throughout the First World.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Who knows, maybe even businesses themselves can begin to evaluate the quality of their performance on more than just profits &#8211; the business equivalent of GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long-time readers of my blog will know that I think that exclusively quantitative methods, in investing especially, are domed to failure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s because quantitative methods measure facts and facts, by definition, took place in the past.\u00a0 But investing unfolds in the future.
