{"id":433,"date":"2010-06-03T09:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intuitiveinvestor.com\/web\/?p=433"},"modified":"2018-08-18T17:53:07","modified_gmt":"2018-08-18T21:53:07","slug":"monthly-jobs-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2010\/06\/03\/monthly-jobs-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Monthly jobs data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This morning Automatic Data Processing (ADP) announced private sector job creation for the month of May.\u00a0 According to the payroll\u00a0firm 55,000 jobs were added last month by U.S. businesses.\u00a0 This compares to an economist expected jobs added of 75,000.\u00a0 April&#8217;s previously reported job creation of 32,000 was revised upward to 65,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Separately, the Department of Labor reported that weekly initial jobless claims fell by 10,000 to 453,000.\u00a0 The four week moving average increased by 1,750 to 459,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> I am certain that the financial markets will focus on the &#8220;missed&#8221; jobs number.\u00a0 After all, job creation in the U.S. fell short of estimates by 26.7% (= 55K \/ 75K &#8211; 1).\u00a0 However, that April&#8217;s job creation data was revised dramatically upward is much more important to me.\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ADP processes a huge proportion of paychecks in the United States.\u00a0 For these data it has very specific and up-to-the-moment information.\u00a0 But its survey attempts to cover the entire landscape of the U.S. jobs market.\u00a0 For the figures to have been revised so dramatically is an indication that smaller companies, those not served by ADP, are creating jobs right now.\u00a0 ADP had to work an extra month to gather data outside of its direct purview in order to get a better picture of the U.S. jobs market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Small businesses are usually the first to hire as recessions end, followed by big companies.\u00a0 This is because big companies often have very lucrative jobs benefits beyond salaries.\u00a0 So big companies are more reluctant to hire when they feel there is uncertainty.\u00a0 Also, big companies often outsource jobs before they will permanently hire.\u00a0 Small companies are less likely to outsource.\u00a0 Thus, April&#8217;s big revision is <strong>very important<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my opinion that May&#8217;s data will also be revised upward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As an investor, if the market dips on news like this it is an excellent time to add more shares of businesses you prefer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 8; while job creation remains important, right now the data are supporting the thesis I have been putting forth for a very long-time now: a slow emergence from recession.\u00a0 Additionally, the economy is definitely adding jobs.\u00a0 That is, no longer are the data well withing the range of a statistical error.\u00a0 We can honestly say the U.S. economy is robust enough to hire (very expensive) labor capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning Automatic Data Processing (ADP) announced private sector job creation for the month of May.\u00a0 According to the payroll\u00a0firm 55,000 jobs were added last month by U.S. businesses.\u00a0 This compares to an economist expected jobs added of 75,000.\u00a0 April&#8217;s previously reported job creation of 32,000 was revised upward to 65,000.
