{"id":4578,"date":"2011-08-02T07:34:59","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T13:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonapollovoss.local\/?p=4578"},"modified":"2018-09-21T02:05:32","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T06:05:32","slug":"consumer-spending-slows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web\/2011\/08\/02\/consumer-spending-slows\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumer Spending Slows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This morning the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that consumer spending fell 0.2% in June.\u00a0 Meanwhile, consumer incomes rose 0.1%, and savings rose 5.4%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Analysis:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">All of these data suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonapollovoss.com\/web2010\/07\/20\/a-game-of-chicken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the economic &#8220;game of chicken&#8221; between businesses and consumers<\/a> that I have been talking about for well over a year is in restoration mode &#8211; not a good thing.\u00a0 Even though consumer incomes are rising &#8211; a paltry 0.1% &#8211; consumer spending fell while savings rose.\u00a0 This combination is evidence of a consumer that is hunkering down in bunker mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Who could blame them?\u00a0 Businesses continue to sit on huge piles of cash and are not, generally, hiring; while the U.S. government plays its own game of chicken with the fiscal health of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Intuitively speaking, consumers are not in a panic.\u00a0 But there is a feeling of &#8220;we&#8217;ve seen this before.&#8221;\u00a0 The &#8220;before&#8221; is, of course, the Great Recession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">One of the few things that has changed in the last three years is that U.S. consumers have been paying off credit card debt and saving more money.\u00a0 This will ultimately provide a stronger footing for future economic growth and stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But for now, consumers, who make up 70% of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) are in sideways mode.\u00a0 What this means is that we are likely to see a flat, to slightly up GDP growth in the third quarter.\u00a0 That growth, if it pans out, is evidence of an economy flirting with a dip into economic shrinkage; two quarters of that, and you have a double-dip recession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Importance grade:<\/strong> 8; while important, as I have said many times, consumers are typically a lagging indicator.\u00a0 The drop in consumer spending in the face of growing consumer incomes represents a choice to spend less money.\u00a0 So if there is some good news &#8211; in the stock market, on the jobs front, or with a U.S. government debt deal &#8211; consumers <em>can<\/em> choose to increase their spending.\u00a0 In other words, I am attributing the drop to the grim pallor of the news over the last eight weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jason<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This morning the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that consumer spending fell 0.2% in June.\u00a0 Meanwhile, consumer incomes rose 0.1%, and savings rose 5.4%.
